Are You Ready To Relay?

On July 23, armed with sunscreen, bags of ice, a few squirt guns, and many bottles of water and Gatorade, Team VEKA took on the scorching heat to participate in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.

The Relay is an overnight community fundraising walk where teams of people camp out around a track and members of the team take turns walking the track. Food, games and activities provide entertainment over the 24-hour period.

This year, Team VEKA was one of 47 teams, comprised of 527 participants, who together raised an impressive $162,952.07. Of that total, Team VEKA contributed $6,584.99, the result of months of fundraising. Under the direction of co-captains Alysha Edgell and Jessica Powell, team members created many opportunities for VEKA employees to contribute to the cause: gift basket raffles, Sarris candy sales, a taco bar, executive parking raffle, yard sale and more.

Fundraising continued on the day of the event with Spin-to-Win, more basket raffles and caramel corn for sale in the VEKA booth. Team VEKA kept cool on the hot day by participating in the water balloon war, dunk tank and, in a proud moment, winning the frozen t-shirt contest!

As night fell the mood turned solemn as the luminaria ceremony begun. Candles were lit in personalized bags and were placed around the Relay track as glowing tributes to those who’ve been affected by cancer. After all the candles were lit, walkers took a silent lap around the track.

Since 1985, Relay For Life events have cumulatively raised more than $3 billion to help the American Cancer Society accelerate the progress against cancer. VEKA is proud to have been able to contribute to this great cause for the third year in a row.
